SUMMARY

Spencer, the younger son of Loretta Ragan, grew up a spoiled child whose father died not long after his birth. As a teenager, he had the freedom that came with attending boarding school away from home. His world was rocked by the revelation that his mother, Loretta, was truly a criminal mastermind, and then his brother, Philip, used Spencer’s trust fund as leverage to force him to move to King’s Bay to attend college.

Spencer was thrown for an even greater loop when he learned that Tim and Claire Fisher were his biological parents and he had been switched with Travis Fisher as an infant. He rejected the Fishers’ attempts to build a relationship, dropped out of KBU, spent three months traveling Europe, and returned to King’s Bay to ask Philip for money — which he needed to pay off gambling debts. After the bookie had Spencer beaten, Philip paid off the debt and made Spencer work as his photography assistant to pay him back, but Spencer quickly flamed out. Tim offered Spencer a position at Vision Publishing, where he had briefly interned, and Spencer took the job. In the process, Spencer developed a bond with his biological parents and the Fisher family. However, that turned sour when Tim and Claire briefly wondered if Spencer might be the Footprint Killer.

The killer actually turned out to be Philip, which left Spencer reeling. He also began to suspect that he might be the father of Natalie Bishop’s baby. Though Natalie was engaged to his uncle, Jason, she’d had a fling with Spencer while she and Jason were on a break. Spencer demanded a DNA test, and Natalie doctored the results; when he caught onto her scheme and had another test run, proving that he was Peter’s father, they argued and he fell down the stairs. Natalie fled, and Spencer landed in a coma. When he awoke, he had no memory of the paternity results or of the accident. He moved back in with Tim. Unbeknownst to any of them, live-in nurse Sonja Kahele was secretly being paid by Natalie to feed Spencer subliminal messages that would keep his memory from returning. When Loretta arranged for the truth to come out during Jason and Natalie’s wedding, Spencer regained his memory and realized that he was Peter’s father.

He feared that Jason and Natalie might conspire to keep Peter from him, so he kidnapped the boy. When he panicked about legal repercussions, he called Elly Vanderbilt for help, and she summoned Natalie to make a deal: Spencer wouldn’t accuse Natalie of pushing him down the stairs if Natalie helped cover the kidnapping. Spencer and Natalie entered into a marriage of convenience. Jason challenged them for custody, and they were as surprised as anyone when Jason nearly missed the court hearing and a P.I. produced photos insinuating that he’d been having an illicit affair with Alex Marshall. The judge awarded custody to Spencer and Natalie, and after a heated Jason punched Spencer in front of witnesses, his appeal was thrown out, too.

Spencer was suspicious of the P.I., whom Elly claimed she’d hired. He questioned Loretta, and her responses gave him reason to think that she had blackmailed Elly into helping set up Jason. However, Elly bristled when Spencer pressed her about the situation. He was sure that there was more to the story. Spencer and Natalie were shocked when Loretta, freshly released from prison, turned up on their doorstep. Natalie convinced Spencer to let Loretta stay with them for the time being. He was unaware that Loretta was now blackmailing Natalie.
