Casting News & Commentary (Oct. 2018)

In Episode 943, readers received not one but two pieces of surprising casting news. The first was the abrupt departure of Tim’s love interest, Sonja Kahele; the second was the return of Danielle’s daughter and Travis’s ex, Elly Vanderbilt.

sonja-2017Though it might not have been clear from the episode itself, Episode 943 marked Sonja’s last appearance, at least for the time being. I considered announcing it beforehand, but i wanted readers to be as caught off-guard by her announcement as Tim was. It’s also rare for a Footprints character to leave in such an open-ended way. Usually a character ties up his/her loose ends before leaving town or dies dramatically. But Sonja exited with a few very important dangling threads. For starters, there’s the fact that Tim doesn’t know why she suddenly broke off their relationship and left King’s Bay — which is that Loretta Ragan threatened to report her to authorities and have her medical license revoked if she didn’t. But there is also the layer that no one knows that it was really Natalie, not Loretta, who paid Sonja to feed Spencer subliminal messages. That secret can’t stay hidden forever, but as a writer, I felt like it might be interesting to bank that info for later, when the dust has settled from Natalie’s other misdeeds. And, of course, there’s that pregnancy test that Sonja was seen tossing away in her final moments…

There is no date set for Sonja’s return, but it stands to reason that this isn’t the last we’ll see of the conflicted physical therapist and her bevy of secrets.

elly-2018Meanwhile, the “mysterious” redhead who had a confrontation with Zane at the coffee shop turned out to be none other than Elly, who was a regular character from 2007-14 and made a brief reappearance in 2015 for Ryan’s funeral. Several readers have asked why I recast the character — who was originally represented by the image of Willa Holland, but is now being represented by Riverdale actress Madelaine Petsch. In all honesty, Elly was never a character who interested or excited me much, which was the fault of my original introduction of her. Her connections and her place on the canvas were interesting, but as a character, she was a rather flat ‘good girl.’ At the time of her exit, it felt right that Travis would be left reeling by the loss of his first love and would then progress into a career and more adult relationships. For the role that Elly will play in upcoming story, I originally planned to introduce a brand-new character, but as I worked through the logistics, it really made sense to fill the role with someone who has a variety of connections and useful history in King’s Bay. At the same time, I wanted to “reboot” her in a way so that I could have something of a fresh start in developing her characterization, which is actually quite similar to what happened to her mother, Danielle, when she returned in the mid-2000s. The character’s history isn’t being rewritten or negated, but her time offscreen will be used to add new layers and make her a more complex, interesting character. Part of the reason I chose to reintroduce her amidst some mystery (that scene with Zane) was because I hoped it would announce that Elly is back as a character with some edge and some story to tell, rather than just a familiar face returning for a wedding as it otherwise could have seemed.
