Episode 1004

Previously…
– Molly was unable to keep the news of her pregnancy to herself any longer and told Brent — unaware that Claire was nearby and heard everything. Molly and Brent had to admit to a devastated Claire that they’d slept together.
– During an argument with Matt, Jake fell out the attic window and was rushed to the hospital.
– Loretta Ragan’s arrival — and her announcement that she’d been paroled — sent shockwaves through the Fisher family.

Marcus Gray picks up his phone, glances at the screen, and sighs at the lack of notifications as he places it back on the table.

“It’s so weird,” he says, wrapping both hands around his mug of hot chocolate. “He’s my dad, and now he’s just…”

The teenager sits in a booth toward the back of Cassie’s Coffee House, with his two friends seated across from him. Outside, gentle but steady rainfall patters against the pavement and windows.

“His body is trying to heal itself,” Christian Taylor offers from the other side of the booth. “That’s what a coma really is. Like really good sleep so he can get better.”

Bree Halston, seated beside Christian, nods emphatically. “Right. Spencer was in a coma after he fell down the stairs.”

“And he’s fine now! He’s great,” Christian says with growing optimism. “Your dad is gonna be fine, Marcus. We just have to be patient and send him good vibes.”

marcus-2017“I don’t know if I have any of those to send.” Marcus sips his hot cocoa.

“Then we’ll send them for you,” Bree says. “Right, Christian?”

“Right,” the other teen agrees. “Marcus, after you and Tori got in your car accident, we were all pulling for you, and look at you now.”

Marcus frowns as he sets down his hot cocoa.

“He’s my dad,” he finally says. “If he doesn’t make it…”

Bree reaches across and grabs his hand. “He will make it. Okay?”

Christian nods again and picks up his own Chai latte. He drinks from it before asking softly, “How’s your mom doing?”

“She’s a mess, too. She’s been at the hospital, like, 24/7.” Again he checks his phone screen. “I probably need to get over there. I told her I’d come by.”

“Do you want us to come with you?” Bree asks. “We could just hang out and do our homework there, in case you need anything.”

“Nah, but thanks,” Marcus says. He slides out of the booth, slips his backpack over his shoulders, and grabs his hot chocolate.

“Text us if there’s anything we can do,” Christian says. “Anything at all.”

“He means that,” Bree adds. “And so do I.”

Marcus manages a grateful smile. “Thanks, guys. You rock.”

He flashes them a peace sign and then heads toward the exit of the coffee house.

“I really hope his dad wakes up soon,” Bree says once Marcus is out of hearing range.

“Me, too,” Christian says forlornly, finally allowing his nervousness to show.

—–

Molly Taylor sits uneasily on the sofa in her mother’s living room, her hands folded tightly in her lap. A daytime talk show plays at a faint volume from the TV on the other side of the room, but it barely registers at all for Molly. Being in this house normally brings her such peace and comfort, but today, she feels as tense and unsteady as she has for weeks.

“Are you sure you don’t want a coffee?” Paula Fisher asks as she returns from the kitchen with a coffee for herself and a sparkling water for her daughter. She sets them both on the wooden coffee table before taking a seat beside Molly.

“No, I’m good. But thanks,” Molly says. In truth, caffeine sounds wonderful right now, because she feels as though she is running on fumes; however, she knows that she needs to limit her consumption greatly because of her pregnancy.

“You don’t seem quite like yourself,” Paula observes. She studies Molly more carefully. In spite of her polished makeup and chic, ruffle-necked white blouse, Molly’s exhaustion — both physical and emotional — shows through clearly.

molly-2017“Everything is all right,” Molly tells her, “but there’s something I need to talk to you about.”

Paula purses her lips. “When you asked if you could come visit in the middle of a workday, I knew something must be going on.”

“I just wanted a chance to talk without anyone else around.”

“It’s only you and me right now.” Paula offers her a warm, inviting smile. “What’s bothering you?”

“You know how I wound up not coming over on Christmas day?”

“That seemed strange. I was worried.”

“It was a strange day.” Molly picks up the glass of seltzer and watches the bubbles dancing on its surface for a long moment. “I took the boys to Brent’s, and then…”

“Molly,” Paula says after a spell of loaded silence. “What happened?”

Molly swallows hard, thinking it all over again, and finally blurts out: “Mom, I’m pregnant.”

Paula lurches backward, suddenly sitting upright. “What? Are you and Conrad…?”

“No,” she answers with a decisive shake of her head. “We’re through.”

“But I didn’t know you were seeing anyone.”

“I’m not.”

“Oh, no.” Paula brings a hand to cover her mouth as she processes the news. “Is the father someone you regret being with?”

“No. Well, yes, in a way. But no — what I regret is the way it happened. And the way it’s all gone since then.”

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“Mom,” Molly says, forcing the words out, “the baby… it’s Brent’s.”

“Thanks for coming in,” Brent Taylor says as he closes the door to his office. He holds out his hands, and his visitor hands him a rain-spattered jacket, which Brent hangs on a peg beside the door.

“Yeah, of course.” Tim Fisher waits until Brent crosses back to the other side of the desk before seating himself in one of the plainly upholstered guest chairs. The police commander’s office is very no-frills, decorated only with a few plaques bearing Brent’s professional accreditations and a handful of photos of his sons.

“I wish I had better news for you,” Brent says as he takes his own seat in his leather desk chair. “I’ve been working around the clock trying to find some magic loophole.”

“There’s no way that woman is legitimately free,” Tim responds. “She’s a menace to society.”

“Believe me when I tell you that I’ve said that to everyone: cops, prosecutors, judges. But Loretta was eligible for parole, and somehow, she managed to be a model prisoner while she was locked up.”

Tim’s eyes flare in astonishment. “The fact that she made a beeline for the city where the people she tortured all live should be a red flag.”

“I don’t trust her for a minute,” Brent says. “But they were never able to connect her officially or legally to a lot of things that we all know she was involved in. The charges that actually got her locked up were kind of a grab-bag of incidents.”

“She helped Nick Moriani hold us all captive in the basement of my dad’s restaurant and planted bombs all over the property. Sarah lost her baby. You lost your leg–”

“I know.” Brent closes his eyes for a moment at the memory of that horrible day. “But no one could ever prove that Loretta had a hand in that. So now we have to deal with the fact that she’s free.”

Tim shakes his head with disgust. “I can’t believe any sane person, let alone an entire legal system, would let that lunatic roam free.”

“Neither can I.” Leaning back in his chair, Brent brings his hand to his chin. “Has Spencer had anything else to say? He told me that Natalie convinced him to let Loretta stay with them.”

“She thought it was the best way to stay in her good graces. For once, I don’t think she’s wrong, even though the idea of being under the same roof as that woman–”

“–is like a horror movie. I know.”

“How’s Claire holding up? We’ve texted back and forth, but she seems to be keeping herself busy with work.”

Brent’s entire body clenches at the mention of Claire. They have hardly communicated since Christmas day; he knows how furious Claire is with him, and he cannot blame her, but it pains him to be in such limbo. On one hand, it’s a relief that Tim doesn’t seem to have a clue about what is going on, but on the other, Brent wishes that everyone already knew the news so that the blowback could commence. Then again, Tim wouldn’t be sitting here chatting with him if that were the case.

“I think everyone’s doing their best to hold it together right now,” he says flatly.

“So what can we do about Loretta?” Tim asks. “She’s staying in a house with my grandson. Isn’t there some way we can force to stay away?”

“It’s going to be really tough to convince a judge that she poses a threat to Peter. She never endangered her kids–”

“Philip turned into a serial killer!”

“I know,” Brent says, “but I don’t know if that’s gonna get us a restraining order on behalf of a minor. Besides, it wouldn’t stop her from running loose or necessarily keep her away from Peter. We all know Loretta has a… creative relationship with the law.”

“And that’s the one thing that could get us what we need,” Tim says, leaning forward as he sets his elbows on the desk. “One violation of something like a restraining order and Loretta goes back to prison, right?”

Brent responds with a tentative nod.

“Then maybe that’s the play here. Give her just enough rope to hang herself.”

“That’s a lot like playing with fire, Tim.”

“We’re playing with it just by being in the same town as that woman,” Tim says. “And after all she’s done to this family, it’s a risk I’m more than willing to take.”

—–

After Marcus leaves, Christian turns to Bree.

“How’s it going with Spencer’s mom or whatever living at your house?” he asks.

Bree widens her already-large eyes. “I’ve been staying at my dad’s most nights. I slept there Christmas night when she showed up, and I had the creeps all night.”

“I don’t blame you,” Christian replies. “She tried to kill my dad and Claire. And did a bunch of other crazy stuff. I can’t believe they let her out of prison.”

“I can’t believe my mom thought it was a good idea for her to stay at the house.”

“Yeah, why would she let that happen?!”

bree-2017“She says it’s like, keep your friends close and your enemies closer,” Bree explains. “Like if Loretta is in the house, she gets to see Peter, so she won’t do anything nuts like kidnap him.”

Christian shakes his head. “Can’t we all just get a big restraining order against her or something?”

“Ask your dad.”

“He’s trying to do whatever he can. Like, he’s been working nonstop since Christmas. We’ve been at our mom’s a lot. So I guess the opposite of what you’re doing.”

Bree fiddles with the teabag dangling from her now-empty cup.

“Do you think things are ever just gonna be calm and normal?” she asks after a long pause. “Or does growing up just mean life is always crazy AF?”

“Crazy AF, for sure,” Christian says before downing the rest of his Chai. “Wanna move to the middle of the woods or something?”

“Only if we can get wi-fi,” Bree says, and the two of them crack up with laughter.

hospital

Marcus pauses by the open door of his father’s room in the Intensive Care Unit. He watches his mother, sitting by Jake’s bedside, clasping one of the comatose man’s hands between both of hers.

“Jake, it’s me,” Mia is saying. “I don’t know if you can hear me… but I’m here. And I’ll be here until you wake up.”

Although he can’t see her face, Marcus hears his mother sniffle. Just around her shoulder, he can see his dad’s face, so still and expressionless. Something about it doesn’t quite look restful, though; it is as if Jake feels as tense as they do, waiting for the moment when he can wake up.

“Just come back to us,” Mia says. “Please. We love you.”

Marcus waits for several seconds to pass, although they feel like they stretch on for minutes. Then he takes a deep, very audible breath and raps his knuckles on the door.

Mia turns around with a start.

“Hey, baby,” she says, forcing a pleasant expression despite the mistiness in her eyes.

“Hey, Mom. How you doing?”

“I’m okay. Come here.”

Marcus walks into her opened arms. Mia wraps them around her son, who is now taller than her, and holds him.

“No change?” he asks.

“Nothing,” she says as they separate. “But he’ll be happy to know you’re here. You can say hi to him.”

Marcus eyes the motionless figure in the bed.

“Go on,” Mia urges.

“Hey, Dad,” Marcus says, feeling silly even as he hopes that it will somehow help. “It’s Marcus. I’m here with Mom.”

Just as Mia begins to smile at the interaction, a middle-aged man with wire-rimmed glasses and a white coat enters the room with a clipboard. As soon as they see him, mother and son stiffen up.

“Dr. Quigley,” Mia says, again sniffling. “What’s going on?”

The doctor regards them with a grave look and then lowers his clipboard.

“I’ve just been over your husband’s latest tests,” he tells them, “and I’m afraid the results are troubling.”

—–

A full spectrum of emotions — shock, disbelief, confusion, worry — plays over Paula’s face in the seconds that follow Molly’s announcement.

“I told him on Christmas day,” Molly says, unsure how else to continue the tale, “and I didn’t realize Claire was there. She heard everything.”

Paula lets out a gasp before saying, “Oh my goodness.”

“Yeah. It went about as well as you would think.”

“I don’t understand.” Paula stares at the television, where the talk show has switched to a commercial for some prescription drug or another. “If you and Brent are getting back together, why was he spending Christmas with Claire? And why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because we aren’t,” Molly says, feeling the stabs of pain in her own gut at having to make the admission. “That’s what I was hoping would happen, but…”

“So you…” Paula rolls her hand over, as if to indicate what happened between the former spouses.

Molly nods in confirmation.

“When we were locked in the trunk of that car, thinking we were going to die,” she explains, “we… we admitted that we still love one another. That ending our marriage might not have been the best decision.”

“You’ve been divorced for years.”

“And, at the time, it did seem like the right choice. We were so divided, and Brent was so focused on bringing down Loretta Ragan — who, by the way, I can’t believe is in town–”

“Neither can I. But we’ll get back to that. Honey, you’re pregnant! That’s still wonderful news.”

Molly’s glum expression reflects how she is unable to see the pregnancy in that way just yet.

paula-2017“A child is a blessing,” Paula says, “and you have the means to raise him or her, regardless of how things go between you and Brent.”

“I know. I thought… for a minute, I wondered whether it was a mistake to keep the baby–”

“Molly.”

“–but at my age, the chances of conceiving aren’t exactly in my favor, and if the universe wants me to have this baby, then I’m going to,” she continues.

“You’ll have all the support that you need,” Paula tells her, “though I really would hope that Brent would step up and provide for his child.”

“He will. I don’t doubt that. We’re just… we have to figure things out. Please don’t tell anyone else yet, Mom. The twins don’t know. Brent and I need to work out how to tell them.”

“Of course. Claire hasn’t told anyone?”

“Tempest was there. She overheard. But I don’t think anyone else knows.” Again Molly looks into the fizzy water in her glass. “Claire isn’t speaking to Brent. I can’t blame her, but… this isn’t how either of us wanted this to go.”

“Claire has survived worse,” Paula says. “She’s a strong woman. What matters now is bringing this child into the world safe and loved. I hope you’ve been to a doctor.”

Molly nods. “I went right after I took the home pregnancy test, and I’ve been going for check-ups and taking my vitamins. I’m doing my best to take care of my body and the baby. My doctor…” She lets out a sigh. “She made it clear that this is a higher-risk pregnancy, because of my age.”

“Then we need to keep you as free of stress as we possibly can.”

After taking a sip of her seltzer, Molly says, “When you figure out how to do that, will you please let me know? Because it seems impossible right now.”

Paula’s only response is to outstretch her arms and pull her daughter closer.

  1. I don’t remember if Paula ever really showed distaste for Claire in the beginning of the series or if this just showed up halfway through when Ryan entered the picture. But I just love her ‘Claire is a strong woman’ speech because it is both a compliment and a slap in the face. I mean, yes, Claire is definitely a strong woman and she will get through this. But come on Paula, can the woman EVER catch a break with you? Although, Paula sticking up for her child will never break character for her. So I understand why she ‘sided’ with Molly and sort of just swept things under a rug. Also, it does help to focus on the fact that Loretta is back and I’m sure her guns are set on Paula for what happened with Phillip.

Can we talk about this partnership between Brent and Tim. How adorable they are trying to come up with something on Loretta. How awkward it’ll be when Tim finds out about Molly… and then Claire. I wonder if you’re really setting us up for a Tim and Claire end game here? That’s far-fetched, but here me out. It could potentially hit a stride. Especially since neither have had any luck in the love department.

Mia has every right to be upset and for her to stand by her family and try to hold it together makes her a strong woman. I just don’t know where you’re going with this storyline and I just think about this happy loving family that announced their move back to town only to end up in the hospital way more than in their new home!

Albeit, I do still love the slow burn of the teen scene you’re building and I like how much of a role that Marcus plays in it. I can see a triangle building up between the three friends. I wonder what will happen next?

    1. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

Paula was actually a pretty big Claire cheerleader until 2012 or so, when the truth about the Spencer/Travis switch came out and it was revealed that Claire knew much earlier and tried to manage the situation. Between that and Claire’s subsequent relationship with Brent, their once-strong bond has weakened quite a bit. It *is* so Paula to take Molly’s side over, well, anyone, though. That Brent/Tim scene was such a tough balancing act, considering what’s going on in Brent’s personal life, but he’s also concerned about everyone in light of Loretta’s appearance. I really love getting to play Tim in patriarch mode like this. Given what he went through with Nick and Loretta, it really kicks him into high gear. He and Claire have always maintained their bond, too, even when it’s purely as friends and co-parents, so them potentially reuniting isn’t the craziest idea I’ve ever heard! But they both have a lot of more pressing stuff going on right now.

Poor Mia, truly. Things have not been easy since they relocated to King’s Bay. This will finally give us an opportunity to gain more insight into Mia as a person, since she’s always been rather secondary to the Gray brothers’ dynamic. I’m also thrilled to be getting to use Marcus more. There’s something very genuine about him, and I can’t wait to write more for him as time goes by.

Thanks again! Glad you’re enjoying the new stuff going on.

  2. I love the interaction between Christian & Bree! It was so sweet and innocent. I wonder if this could be some young love? (I don’t think they are related now that Molly & Conrad split)

I’m glad that Molly told Paula the truth. I think Paula was speaking for the audience with her surprise of the situation. Not that this isn’t a soap staple but with Molly’s age … which I also love that you’re addressing. Also noted that it’s a high risk pregnancy as a result. I suspect that will also come into play down the road.

When Tim showed up at Brents I was expecting him to tell him to be there for Claire. Tims plan to trap Loretta does seem like they are playing with fire but it could produce good drama too. Time will tell how this plays out!

I’m wondering how long Jake will stay comatose. Between Marcus’ accident and this, I hope the family has good medical insurance 😭

    Good ep!

    1. Thanks for your post, Dallas!

Molly needed to open up to someone, and she knows both that Paula will take care of her and that Paula has always been her biggest cheerleader. It would be silly to pretend like Molly’s at an age where conceiving a child or carrying a baby to term would be without concern — so I want to play the reality of that. The children she had when she at least 30 are nearly grown, so it would be silly to pretend like she’s somehow under 40 now!

I thought it was interesting to play those Tim/Brent scenes from Brent’s POV, with him not being clear whether Tim knew anything that had happened or not. The news of the pregnancy will start to spread through the family soon, but that added an interesting tension on Brent’s side of the conversation, whereas Tim was solely focused on Loretta. They’re all definitely playing with fire (maybe even if they choose to do nothing about Loretta), so this really ignites things in a way that I find exciting.

Dying about the Gray family’s insurance. LOL! This has not been a great move for them. Maybe heading back to Pittsburgh would be the safe choice?

      Thanks again!
