Episode 1060

Previously…
– When the prototypes for Objection’s spring/summer line came back all wrong, Molly realized that Tori had entered much of the information into the database incorrectly.
– Tori swore that she hadn’t made the errors and, feeling ill, left work early.
– Tempest began to let her long-estranged brother, Isaac, back into her life.

The apartment is dark, save for the glow of the television, on which an episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac is playing. Across from the TV, Tori Gray is curled up on the sofa, her knees tucked to her chest and a blanket draped over her entire body. One hand sticks out, holding a glass that is coming perilously close to needing a refill of white wine.

She startles at the sound of a key in the front door and remains tense as the door is pushed open with its characteristic creaking noise. She is suddenly very conscious of how disheveled she must look, especially given that it is only mid-evening and not late at night, as her boyfriend steps into the apartment and sets his gaze on her.

“You okay?” Zane Tanaka asks after a long pause, during which he evaluates the state of affairs with confusion.

“I don’t know,” Tori admits. She reaches forward to place her wine glass on the coffee table.

Zane drops his bag by the door and comes toward the couch. “What’s up?”

“Something big got screwed up at work, and it’s all my fault.”

“Babe.” He sits down and places a hand on her blanket-covered knee. “Are you sure it’s your fault?”

She nods with resignation. “It has to be. I… Remember the night Aunt Molly and I were working late, and you brought us those coffees?”

“Yeah. Of course.”

“It was my job to enter all the specs for the manufacturer into this database that night,” she explains, “and I was sure I did it right. I mean, I could see missing one or two things, but the–” She stops, too overwhelmed, and Zane leans forward to listen.

“The prototypes came back and they’re all wrong,” Tori says. “Like, all wrong. I had everything right in my notes, but I guess when I input them, between being tired and it being my first time…”

“So Molly’s blaming this all on you?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s bullshit!”

“She isn’t wrong.” Tori’s sad eyes meet his, and he looks at her with such caring and compassion that she feels ever-so-slightly soothed for the first time in hours. “I’m the one who screwed up.”

Suddenly Zane springs to his feet. “I’m gonna go have a word with her.”

“What? No.” Tori tosses off the blanket and stands, too. “You can’t do that.”

“Why not? It’s not fair for her to put this completely on you.”

“But it’s my fault,” Tori says, her shoulders somehow sinking even further. “I thought I had a handle on the work, but maybe I’m in over my head.”

Zane shakes his head with displeasure. “You’re not. If anything, you’re too good for all the low-level crap she has you doing.”

Tori drops back onto the couch, too despondent to reply.

“So what, they sent you home early?” he asks.

“No. I left. I mean, I felt sick to my stomach, so I had H.R. send up an intern to cover my desk and came home early.”

“Honestly? Good,” Zane says. “That was the perfect thing to do.”

“Really?” she asks, her face twisted with uncertainty.

“Yeah. Show them that if they’re gonna disrespect you, you won’t stand for it. And it’s the perfect set-up for your next move.”

“Next move?”

“The only move you can make,” Zane says. “Quitting.”

Trevor Brooks has his leather messenger bag slung across his body and his car keys in his hand as he pushes through the glass door and steps into the lobby of Objection Designs. He slows down when he sees Finn Campbell still behind the large reception desk, his head buried in paperwork.

“Didn’t think I’d see you still there,” Trevor comments as he comes up to the desk. “Don’t they usually make you clock out at 6?”

Finn looks up from the papers spread in front of him. “Molly and Ashley are busy putting out fires, so I offered to help get everything back into the database properly.”

“That was nice of you.”

With a bashful shrug, Finn says, “It’s not like I have anything better to do. And a little face time with the boss — and letting her see that I can do more than answer phones and stamp parking tickets — can’t hurt.”

“Absolutely not. It’s great to show that kind of initiative.”

“That’s what I’m hoping. But some of this stuff is…”

Trevor stretches over the desk to take a look at what Finn is working on. “Can I help?”

“You don’t have to do that. You’re on your way out.”

“It’s fine. Chase goes to bed in, like, fifteen minutes, so I’m going to miss him anyway. And Alex was ordering takeout tonight.” He pulls his phone from his pocket and quickly types out a text message.

“Are you sure?” Finn asks.

“I just texted Alex that I have to take care of one more thing here, so yeah, I’m sure.”

Trevor pulls the strap of his messenger bag over his head and sets it down beside the reception desk as he moves around to join Finn.

“Okay, now show me what’s confusing you,” Trevor says as he positions himself behind Finn and begins glancing over the documents.

Finn looks back over his shoulder with a grin on his face.

“What?” Trevor asks.

“It’s all confusing me.”

Trevor laughs and then leans forward, his chest brushing against Finn’s arm, as he takes a closer look at the work in front of them.

With one ear attuned to the messages crackling over the P.A. system and several patient files clutched in one hand, Claire Fisher strides through the open expanse of the hospital’s main floor. She turns toward the elevator bay but slows to a stop when she recognizes an unexpected face stepping off one of the elevator cars.

She waits, wondering if he will recognize her. Sure enough, Isaac Banks only makes it a few more steps before he spots Claire, as well.

Tempest didn’t mention that you were back in town,” she says as they approach one another.

“She doesn’t know yet,” the tall man replies. “Didn’t want to say anything ’til it was official.”

Claire cocks her head to one side. “Until what was official?”

“There was an opening for a doctor in the emergency room here. Looks like we’re gonna be working together, in a way.”

“Wow. So you’re putting down roots in King’s Bay.”

“You don’t sound too enthusiastic about that,” Isaac says, narrowing his eyes at her.

“I’m happy you found a job, and I’m happy Tempest has the opportunity to reconnect with you,” Claire tells him.

“I’m excited about that, too. It feels like we really made some progress, with Thanksgiving and Christmas and everything. And now I’ll be here full-time, so I can get to know her and our little brother.”

“And I hope that’s all possible,” she says, with a tinge of hesitance working at the edges of her words.

“Still not getting that enthusiasm.”

Claire’s silence stretches out for another few seconds before she says, “Tempest is like a daughter to me, Isaac. And I know that has to be weird for you — this lady you’ve hardly met considers herself another parent to your sister — but we’ve had a decade of bonding and being there for one another, and I’ve watched as that girl — woman — took every tool she’s had access to and built a life for herself.”

Isaac simply nods reverently as he takes this all in.

“I also know that you probably went through a lot of trauma growing up,” she continues, “and you have your own stuff to deal with. I have every sympathy for that, I really do. Proceed with caution where Tempest is concerned — that’s all I’m saying.”

“I have no intention of doing otherwise,” he says.

“She plays things off like she’s tough — and she is tough — but there’s also a little girl in there who’s been hurt and let down and left to fend for herself, and if you do anything to stir up that pain–“

“I won’t. You have my word on that.”

“Good. Then I look forward to working with you.” She sticks out her hand, and after a surprised beat, Isaac reaches out and shakes it.

“I have to get back upstairs,” she says, “but good luck, Isaac.”

“Thanks.”

“And please, let Tempest know about your job soon. I don’t want to feel like I’m keeping things from her.”

She moves past him, quickening her pace to catch an elevator before its doors close and hoping, for Tempest’s sake, that Isaac Banks really is the man he is portraying himself to be.

—–

Zane looms over Tori and folds his arms as if to emphasize his point.

“You think I should quit over this?” she asks uneasily.

“I think you shouldn’t sit around and be your aunt’s punching bag,” he says. “Like you said, you’re new there. For them to trust you with something that big and then get pissed when it doesn’t turn out perfectly — that’s not cool.”

Tori sighs. “It was basically data entry. I can handle that. Or I thought I could.”

“Honestly, your aunt isn’t exactly in the best headspace right now, either,” Zane adds. “She’s got to be distracted by what she’s going through–“

“Zane, she lost a baby, just like we did.”

“That’s what I mean! Think about how long it took for us to get back on an even keel after what we went through. Your aunt is at work giving people orders and pretending like everything’s fine when it’s clearly not.”

Tori falls back into the couch and pulls the blanket up around her. “I don’t know…”

“All I’m saying,” Zane says, sitting back down beside her, “is that Molly has to be struggling to keep her head above water, and it’s not fair for her to take things out on you because her head isn’t one hundred percent in the game, either.”

For a few seconds, Tori simply stares blankly at the TV, letting Zane’s point wash over her.

“I don’t think I should quit,” she says. “I think I should go back tomorrow and prove that this was a one-time mistake. That I’m capable of learning from it and not letting it happen again.”

She watches Zane absorb that. He seems to bite down on his lower lip as he considers a response.

Finally he says, “That’s why they’re lucky to have you. Because you’re that committed to giving them your best even when they don’t deserve it.”

“I just feel like such an idiot,” she says.

“I know, babe. Come here.”

He holds out his open arms, and Tori gladly collapses into him. Zane enfolds her in his hold and gently rocks back and forth.

“I support you in whatever you decide to do,” he says, “but just know that you deserve better than this treatment.”

“Thanks,” she says wearily. “I guess we’ll see if I even have a job tomorrow.”

“It’s all gonna work out, babe. I promise.”

With her head buried in his chest, Zane continues to hold her — and he is unable to keep a wicked grin, long held inside, from curling his lips.

—–

In the Objection staff kitchen, Trevor is pulling two cans of sparkling water from the refrigerator when he hears the click-clack of high heels entering the room. He looks up to see Molly Taylor walking in, a weary expression on her face.

“Trevor. Hi,” she says, her surprise apparent. “What are you still doing here? Please don’t tell me there’s some other crisis–“

“No, no.” He stands up and closes the fridge. “I told Finn I’d look over his work before he put anything into the database. Just to be sure.”

She exhales with relief. “Okay. Great. Thank you for doing that.”

“He had a few questions to clarify things, but he’s done a really good job with everything,” Trevor says.

“I really appreciate him stepping up to help.” She pauses and shakes her head. “I can’t believe Tori left. Or that she messed this up so badly in the first place.”

“It really doesn’t sound like her. You’ve been so happy with her work since she started.”

“Truth be told… I don’t think Tori is the problem.”

“How do you mean?”

“The night we were working to get everything over to the manufacturers,” Molly explains, “Zane dropped by. He brought us coffees and said he just wanted to check in and wish Tori well.”

“And…”

“It was strange, that’s all. Tori’s demeanor changed when he showed up. It was like she was suddenly on-edge. He played it off like this sweet little check-in, but… I don’t know.”

“You think he distracted her so much that she completely messed up the data entry?”

“I guess.” She falls quiet for a moment and runs a manicured nail over the countertop as she thinks. “I don’t know if you know this, but I was engaged before I– before I was with Brent. To a coworker, actually.”

Trevor furrows his brow. “Sounds vaguely familiar.”

“His name was Craig Simmons,” she says. “He was a very disturbed man. I can’t believe I didn’t see it at the time, looking back. But even when he was being sweet, there was this… this intensity to it. Like his charm was always in overdrive.”

“And you see the same thing in Zane,” Trevor says.

“Between Sarah’s reservations about him and the fact that he actually did blackmail us, I guess I’m predisposed to see him in a certain light. But I don’t think I was imagining things. The way he showed up and was so schmooze-y… it’s like he wants to control her.”

“Well, it makes a lot of sense that she’d be distracted by that.”

“Yeah. But errors like this can’t happen,” Molly says, “and the fact that she left early is not good. She should be here helping us fix this.”

“What are you going to do?” Trevor asks.

She uses two fingers to rub her temple.

“I don’t know,” she admits. “But if something doesn’t change, I’m going to have no choice but to fire her.”
