Episode 1059

Previously…
– Molly and Tori burned the midnight oil working to get specifications for Objection’s spring/summer line to the manufacturer.
– Rosie was shocked when Social Services alerted her that the baby who’d been abandoned outside the KBPD had been brought to the hospital after her foster parents were arrested for neglect.
– After learning that the baby would be okay, Rosie and Travis decided to volunteer as foster parents.

The glass door swings open, like a hand making a sweeping gesture to present the bustling offices of Objection Designs. With two boxes stacked carefully in his arms, Finn Campbell crosses from the lobby onto the main office floor. He moves mostly by instinct, since the boxes are obstructing his view, and offers an occasional “Coming through” or “Excuse me” as he navigates his way to the Chief Creative Officer’s suite.

When he steps into the anteroom, Molly Taylor‘s primary assistant, Ashley, is at her desk with her phone pressed to her ear. She motions for Finn to continue into Molly’s office.

“Is that what I think it is?” Molly asks as soon as Finn enters.

“It sure is — the first prototypes for the spring/summer line. They were just delivered,” Finn says as he sets the boxes on the floor. As he does so, he sees Tori Gray sitting on an upholstered chair nearby, a notepad in her lap and a pen at the ready.

“We’ll finish that later, Tori. Let’s take a look at the prototypes,” Molly says, springing to her feet.

Finn pulls a box-cutter from his pocket. “I brought this. I thought it would be helpful.”

“Thank you,” Molly tells him, and she stands back as he handily cuts open the packages.

Tori places her pad and pen on the chair and comes over to join them.

“This is exciting,” she says as Molly and Finn begin to pull the wrapped contents from the boxes.

Molly beams at her niece. “It always is. Camille used to tell me that when this stopped being exciting, I’d know I was doing something wrong.”

Finn offers a polite smile as he puts the box cutter away and awaits further orders. But Molly is already unwrapping the first garment, a boldly colored floral print top. She holds it up against herself — and then her expression turns to a grimace.

“What’s wrong?” Tori asks.

“The trim on this is all wrong,” Molly says, blinking at the garment as if she can’t quite believe it. “They weren’t supposed to use the lace edge on this one.”

Tori and Finn stand back, their gazes fixed on Molly as she digs into the box and pulls out another item.

She holds it up and shakes her head. “This one is wrong, too. The hem is way too short. I can tell just by looking.”

For another few moments, she rifles through the box, quickly checking the next few garments.

“I don’t understand how this happened,” she says with horror. “They’re wrong. They’re all wrong.”

—–

“Thanks for coming so quickly,” Travis Fisher says as he lets his mother into Rosie Jimenez‘s studio apartment.

Claire Fisher places her purse on the round, wooden table near the kitchen. “Of course. How does she seem?”

“She’s been scratching a lot,” Rosie says as she emerges from the bathroom with a damp hand towel. “I didn’t even know babies could scratch.”

“They figure it out pretty fast when they’re itchy,” Claire says. She crosses to the bassinet, where the infant whom Rosie and Travis recently began fostering is lying on her back in a white-and-pink onesie.

“Hi, Gabrielle,” she says as she gives the baby a sweet smile. “That’s such a nice name for her.”

Rosie and Travis join her beside the bassinet.

“One good thing her first foster family did,” Travis says with disdain.

Rosie lets out a loud sigh. “She was fine last night. Then, this morning, I noticed all these red patches on her head and her face…”

“She keeps crying and scratching,” Travis adds. “A wet towel helps for, like, ten seconds.”

Claire leans over the bassinet and studies the baby intensely. She shifts the infant, looking over her face and scalp, which is covered in fine, brown hair. Rosie and Travis both cringe at the sight of the pinkish-red patches flaring up on Gabrielle’s skin.

“Can you tell what it is?” Rosie asks.

“Mom, is it serious?” Travis presses. “Do we need to get her to the hospital?”

—–

Trevor Brooks stands in the staff kitchen in Objection’s offices, contemplating which flavored Nespresso pod to use for a much-needed kick of caffeine. He spins the carousel again when he hears heavy footsteps and looks up to see Finn walking into the kitchen.

“Do you think it’s weird to drink ‘Peppermint Pinwheel’ coffee after Christmas?” Trevor asks.

Finn turns to him with a start, as if not even having realized that someone else was in the kitchen.  Now Trevor notices the grave expression on the receptionist’s face.

“Are you okay?” Trevor asks.

“Oh. Um, yeah. I am.”

Trevor waits for the “but…” that he can hear is on the verge of emerging.

“But something bad just happened,” Finn finally says.

Turning fully toward him, Trevor leans against the counter and folds his arms. “How bad are we talking?”

—–

“I don’t understand how this could have happened,” Molly says, her attention fixed on her iPad.

Tori stands over the open boxes, pulling out more garments. Even she can tell that there are basic, glaring errors on most of them: incorrect sizing and cuts, different fabrics, and more.

“How could the manufacturer have screwed up this badly? And this much?” she asks.

Molly glances up from the iPad. “They didn’t.”

Tori furrows her brow. “What do you mean? None of these are right.”

“The manufacturer didn’t screw up, though. They followed the exact instructions they were given.”

Confused, Tori lets the shirt in her hand fall to her side. “What?”

Molly walks over to her and shows her the iPad, on which the database is displayed.

“Half the entries are wrong,” she says, using her index finger, with its perfectly manicured pink nail, to make her point. “I asked you to double-check everything before this was uploaded.”

An electric wave of shock zaps through Tori’s body. Her limbs suddenly feel too heavy and too weak as she takes in the figures onscreen.

“I did check,” she says. “I swear.”

“I know it was a late night, Tori, but this is a disaster.”

“Aunt Molly. I got the fabric samples mailed out on time, with the right labels. Look. These–” She quickly examines the shirt in her hand against the database. “The fabrics match what’s here. Why would I have gotten that all right and then completely messed up the database?”

Molly’s eyelids close, and the silence and stillness are somehow even worse to Tori.

“I don’t know,” Molly says at last. “It was late, you were tired, and it was a high-pressure situation. But the entries in this database are wrong.”

“Well, let’s correct them right now.” Tori drops the shirt back into the box and moves to grab her pad from the chair. “I have everything here–“

“We will fix it,” Molly tells her. “But this puts us weeks behind.”

Tori feels her stomach sinking lower and lower, as if it has somehow become a bottomless pit. “I don’t understand. They’re prototypes, so we have to send back corrections and adjustments, anyway.”

“But they usually don’t all come back wrong. We’re essentially going to be asking the manufacturer to start over — weeks later than they should be.” Molly grits her teeth and then shakes her head. “This is a disaster.”

Although she feels impossibly tiny under Molly’s perturbed stare, Tori does her best to find her voice.

“I’ll fix it right now,” she says. “I’ll update the database and call the manufacturer. I’ll take full responsibility–“

“Not now.” Molly holds up her palm. “I appreciate you wanting to help, but I need to do this myself. To make sure it’s right. Please, just… just go.”

Tori stares at her aunt, hoping that Molly will see how sorry she is, maybe even see in her eyes that this truly isn’t Tori’s doing, but after a long moment, Molly turns her back, her focus entirely on the iPad. A wave of nausea crests over Tori, and she hurries out of the office.

—–

“I’m glad you called me to come over,” Claire tells Travis and Rosie as she sets Gabrielle back down in the bassinet.

“Oh god. So it’s bad?” Rosie says as she knots the towel around her hands.

“I’m supposed to work this afternoon, but I can call out so I can come to the hospital, too,” Travis says.

Rosie stares down at the baby in despair. “I can’t believe we let this happen. We’ve been taking such good care of her, I swear, and now–“

“Guys. Calm down,” Claire says firmly. “I’m glad you called me, because you don’t need to be panicking like this.”

Travis and Rosie freeze, both hesitant to speak.

“Gabrielle has eczema,” Claire continues. “You’ll probably want to have it checked out by a pediatrician if it gets worse… but we can try over-the-counter creams first.”

“Eczema? That’s it?” Rosie expels a heavy breath of relief. “I thought something was seriously wrong.”

“Me, too,” a wide-eyed Travis says.

Claire smiles sympathetically. “She’s absolutely fine. I can write down exactly what you should buy. You’ll have to apply it regularly, but this is very treatable.”

Travis exhales, too. “Thank god.”

Rosie reaches out and grips his arm, like a person tossed into the water reaching out for the nearest solid thing.

“When you were a baby, you have no idea how often your dad and I would call your grandparents in a complete panic,” Claire tells them. “It’s how most good parents are with your first one.”

They all look at the baby, who is now squirming in the bassinet.

“I still kinda can’t believe we’re doing this,” Travis says.

“Have there been any leads on her biological parents?” Claire asks.

“Very little,” Rosie says. “Whoever dropped her outside the station managed to avoid the cameras–“

“–or knew to avoid them,” Travis pipes in.

“Right,” Rosie adds. “The detective running the case has been keeping me posted. They checked her DNA against the criminal database and didn’t get any matches, either.”

“Whoever left her didn’t feel they could take care of her,” Claire says, “so maybe it’s best they aren’t found.”

Rosie’s expression hardens. “They also abandoned her. Gabrielle was weeks and weeks past this being covered under the Safe Haven law.”

“Maybe my mom’s right,” Travis says. “It doesn’t matter who left her there — what matters is keeping this little girl safe and giving her a real shot with a family who wants her and loves her.”

“Maybe,” Rosie says quietly, once again turning her attention to the baby jutting out her limbs at random intervals.

“You guys are doing a great thing,” Claire says, “and it’s going to make all the difference for this girl. Remember that.”

The three of them lapse into a contemplative silence, all transfixed by the tiny human being with the sweet smile in the bassinet.

—–

Tori returns to her desk out in the anteroom, but as soon as she hits her chair, she can feel Ashley’s gaze boring into her. And then Molly calls out for Ashley, who scrambles out of her own seat and hurries into the main office.

On her computer monitor, Tori pulls up the database and checks the entries against her pad. She cannot fathom how she possibly could have gotten so many of the entries wrong, but with each incorrect figure she sees, she feels closer and closer to vomiting.

Finally, she picks up her purse, which is lying on the floor, and grabs her coat from the nearby hook. She can hear Molly and Ashley’s voices from within the office, and even the sounds make her feel ill.

She quickly makes her way through the maze of the office floor and into the lobby. Finn is now at his post behind the imposing reception desk, and Trevor stands on the other side of it, chatting with him.

Trevor eyes Tori carefully before asking, “What’s going on in there?”

“I don’t know. She told me to leave.” Tori shakes her head in despair. “Finn, can you call HR to send an intern to cover my desk?”

“You’re leaving?” Finn asks.

“I don’t feel well. I have to go home,” Tori says, but the judgment in his gaze makes her feel even sicker, even more desperate to flee.

“Everyone makes mistakes, Tori. It’s okay,” Trevor says gently. She can’t stomach his pitying look.

“Please, just get an intern to cover for me,” she says, and she doesn’t even wait for a response before she rushes out of the office, desperate to be away from all of this.

  1. First, happy 25th year of releasing your series – what amazing accomplishment, you should be super proud of your consistency with FP.

This mess with Tori has Zane’s fingerprints all over it. I’m sure he went into the database and fucked with the numbers so he could get her back at home. He can’t stand that she is succeeding and working longer hours. Hopefully the truth comes out. I do love the tension this could create for Molly and Sarah too.

I’m loving that Rosie and Travis have the baby, Gabrielle. They are learning as they go but it’s a fun adventure fir them. And because they’re connected/related to Molly and Brent, the Fishers will be torn apart when the truth comes out, which I am excited for.

And sorry Alex, team Trinn 😉

    1. Thank you! Granted, it was only one episode into the 25th year, but still — so crazy to think about.

This incident at Objection certainly does reek of Zane, doesn’t it? Especially since he showed up at the office that same night to ‘check up’ on Tori. It’s been fun building up Objection as a main location for the drama after being a very background spot for a long time, and this will give us some juicy material to play — especially, as you mention, with Molly and Sarah’s POVs on Tori’s work.

The stuff with the baby has so many aspects to it, so that’s a real umbrella story of its own. Not only is Travis related to Molly, but his mom has her own past with Brent, and Rosie has a strong professional tie to Brent. So much prospective drama! And it’s nice to have Rosie and Travis right in the center of some action again.

Ha! “Trinn” definitely have some chemistry, don’t they? (I keep calling them “Fevor,” lol.) We’ll see how Alex reacts as he becomes aware of it. It’s been a while since they had something kind of juicy like this, so it’s a great way to kick off a new year.

      Thanks again for your comments!

  21. I look after a vape shop web directory and we have had a posting from a vape shop in the United States that also markets CBD items. A Calendar month afterwards, PayPal has written to use to say that our account has been restricted and have asked us to take out PayPal as a payment method from our vape shop submission site. We do not sell CBD products like CBD oil. We only provide internet marketing services to CBD firms. I have visited Holland & Barrett– the UK’s Major Health Merchant and if you take a good look, you will see that they sell a pretty considerable variety of CBD goods, primarily CBD oil and they also happen to accept PayPal as a settlement method. It seems that PayPal is administering twos sets of rules to many different firms. Because of this restriction, I can no longer accept PayPal on my CBD-related web site. This has restricted my payment choices and currently, I am greatly contingent on Cryptocurrency payments and direct bank transfers. I have talked with a lawyer from a Magic Circle law office in London and they stated that what PayPal is doing is totally not legal and discriminatory as it ought to be applying a systematic criterion to all firms. I am yet to speak to an additional lawyer from a US law practice in The city of london to see what PayPal’s legal position is in the USA. In the meantime, I would be very appreciative if anyone here at targetdomain could offer me with different payment processors/merchants that deal with CBD firms.

  22. I’m truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It’s a
very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more
often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme?
    Fantastic work!
