– Molly was thrown when she ran into Travis and Rosie with baby Gabrielle.
The sticky, steamy Hawaiian air surrounds Tim and Claire Fisher as they stand at the front door of Sonja Kahele’s one-story home.
“We know you care about Spencer,” Tim says, “and if you ever cared for me, please tell us: what was Loretta talking about? And what do you know that could help us put her back in jail?”
Sonja peers back at them from inside the house, through a sliver of an opening only a few inches wide. She has positioned her body between the door and the doorframe, as if blocking off the house from her unexpected visitors.
“I’m sorry,” she says. “I wish I could help. But I can’t.”
“Why not?” Claire presses. “This is important. It could actually be life-or-death.”
A lump passes down Sonja’s throat as she swallows — or nervously gulps, Claire thinks as she observes the woman closely.
“Because I don’t know anything. I don’t have any information that could help you. I’m sorry.”
“Loretta was using your name to threaten Natalie,” Tim says. “What did she mean by that? How do you even know Natalie Bishop?”
“I…” Sonja’s lips part, but no more sounds come. She sighs and looks out past them, somewhere into the street that runs through this residential neighborhood.
Behind them, Claire hears a car passing, but she dares not look away from Sonja.
“There was that incident at the wedding,” Sonja finally continues. “Your brother and Natalie’s wedding. Loretta arranged to have that e-mail sent to me — to make me read the DNA results out loud. She said she’d hurt my mother…”
“But why you?” Tim asks. “You were a stranger to her.”
“Because,” Sonja says, her words picking up some momentum and force now, “she had tried to pay me to report back to her on Spencer’s condition, and I said no. It was her sick idea of revenge, I guess.” She levels a stare upon Tim. “You know all this. I told you.”
“Something isn’t adding up,” he responds.
Sonja shifts her gaze from him to Claire and then back. “I don’t want any part of this. I’m sorry. I have to– I have to go back inside.”
“Wait,” Tim says.
Sonja shakes her head. Her flowing black hair wags softly. “I wish I could help you. Best of luck.”
Before they can protest any further, she closes the door. The sound of the locks clicking into place are the only further response that Claire and Tim get.
“What do we do now?” Tim asks.
Claire lets out a loud exhale, wishing that she had an answer for him.
Brent Taylor sits behind his desk in the commissioner’s office inside the King’s Bay Police Department. With the office door open, he can hear the loud, lively activity coming from the bullpen area and the rest of the precinct. Rather than being a distraction, the voices and the ringing phones and the purposeful footsteps often keep him motivated to get work done. Today, he is comparing two photographs from an evidence file — photos that he asked to have printed, rather than to view digitally — when he hears the sound of high heels entering his office. He looks up to see his ex-wife marching in.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Molly Taylor demands.
“Tell you what?” Brent asks in confusion.
“About the baby,” she says. “The one who was left here.”
He sets down the two photographs on top of the open folder. “I didn’t not tell you.”
“You didn’t tell me how–” She stops, needing to draw a breath, before going on: “You didn’t come to me right away and tell me how suspicious it was. How weird it was.”
“What’s weird?” Brent asks.
“Our baby dies, and we don’t even get to see him, and a few weeks later, a baby right around the same age is mysteriously dropped outside the police station. That seems weird to me.”
“Mol…” He pushes out his chair and stands. “Where is this coming from?”
She holds her designer purse in front of her, with both hands on the strap. The bright pink color of her silk blouse, adorned with a dangling tie-neck, stands in sharp contrast to her troubled demeanor.
“I saw Travis and Rosie today,” she says. “They had the baby — Gabrielle — with them. And when I saw her…”
He rounds the desk, coming nearer to her in hopes of offering comfort.
“That had to be really tough,” Brent says.
She nods somberly. “It was. It is. But it made me think…”
“Our baby was a boy. Don’t think the same thoughts didn’t go through my head when this baby was found. But it doesn’t add up.”
“I want to see the evidence.”
“The what? What evidence?”
“Everything you have on this baby,” she says. “I want to go through it, Brent. I need to know for sure.”

“I just can’t believe that was it,” Tim says as he pulls the rental car, a black Nissan, into a parking spot in the lot outside the hotel in Princeville where he and Claire reserved two rooms. “We came all this way…”
“I don’t think that was it,” Claire says. She gets out the passenger side of the car and moves to the trunk to retrieve her small rolling suitcase.
Tim pops the trunk and then joins her behind the car. Before Claire has a chance, he removes her suitcase, then his own, from the trunk.
“Thanks, Tim,” she says as she pops up the suitcase’s handle. “And I really don’t think that was it. We have to be creative.”
“I don’t know how far creativity is going to get us if Sonja won’t talk.”
“We’ll figure something out. She was definitely hiding something.”
“You think? It was weird how she was blocking us from seeing inside the house, but…”
“But what? That was a giant red flag.”
“She doesn’t have Loretta secretly in there hanging out and plotting against us,” he says, frustration clear in his voice, as they wheel their suitcases toward the hotel entrance.
“No, but she had someone in there,” Claire counters.
“Yeah. A guy. She called him ‘baby.’ Didn’t you hear that?”
“Why would she hide a guy from us?”
“Because I’m her ex. You saw how flustered she was to see me. She probably didn’t want whoever she’s seeing now to know that her ex had just turned up at her door out of nowhere.”
“Something isn’t adding up,” Claire says with a click of her tongue. She comes to a stop as they reach the hotel’s front entrance. A pair of palm trees flank the double doors.
“This really is beautiful,” she says as her gaze follows the trees up toward the brilliant blue sky. “And this was one of the cheaper hotels.”
“It’d better be comfortable,” Tim says, “because as soon as we check in, I’m taking a nap. That flight took it out of me.”
He pulls open one of the doors to hold it for her.
“Thanks,” Claire tells him as she passes through. “And maybe some rest will help you clear your head — and see that this isn’t over yet.”
With a sigh, he follows her into the lobby. “I hope you’re right — but I’m not sure what else we can do.”

In Brent’s office, he stares back at Molly, uncertain how to respond.
“Come on, Brent,” she says. “Do me a favor. Let me see the file.”
“I can’t, and you know that,” he says.
“Why not?”
“Because it doesn’t involve you in any way.”
“That’s not true. Our baby–“
“Our baby died, Molly.” It pains him even to speak the words, but he knows that he must. The agonizing reality lands hard on Molly, too — he can tell instantly. She cringes and recoils, seeming to fold in on herself for a long moment.
“Sorry to put it so bluntly. But you have to– we have to…” Brent trails off and then places a hand on her arm, hoping that his touch can offer what his words cannot.
“But where did she come from?” Molly finally asks, desperation evident in her face.
“We don’t know. The security cameras outside didn’t manage to pick anything up that we could use to identify who dropped Gabrielle here. And we have almost nothing else to go on. The onesie, the blanket, what she was left in… We haven’t been able to trace any of it.”
“Maybe you’re missing something,” she says.
“Maybe. But I don’t think so. Someone had a baby and was unable to take care of her, or scared to, and they resorted to what they thought was their only option…”
Molly grimaces, as if in physical pain, at the thought. “That poor little girl.”
“I know. But she’s safe now. Rosie and Travis are taking excellent care of her.”
After a pause, Molly nods, almost dutifully. “Yeah. They looked happy. She looked happy.”
“I think she is. And there are lots of families looking to adopt who would be thrilled to raise her,” Brent says. “She’ll find her home.”
“I hope so.”
“She will.” He hesitates for a beat and then opens his arms. “Come here.”
“What?”
“Come on, Mol.” He draws her into an embrace, holding her tight to his chest. “And our little boy is up there somewhere, looking down on us, wanting us to live our lives and be happy.”
She draws in a deep, anguished breath. “It feels wrong…”
“I know. Believe me, I know,” Brent says, pulling her even tighter and wondering to himself if this pain will ever become more bearable.

In her hotel room, Claire takes a shower and changes into fresh clothes in hopes of erasing the grimy feeling she always gets after spending time in airports and on planes. She puts on a sleeveless, green-and-blue printed top with a loose-fitting skirt and peruses the room service menu, but nothing catches her eye, and she realizes that she isn’t very hungry at all.
The entire time, she keeps replaying the brief encounter at Sonja’s door — and, specifically, the way Sonja turned back and called into the house, “I’ll be right there, baby!”
Something about it felt strange. Maybe too performative? It occurs to her that maybe Sonja simply didn’t want them to think that she was alone in the house. As a woman, Claire can relate all too well to the feeling. Or maybe Tim was right and she really did have a man in the house.
She goes down to the hotel lobby and orders an almond milk latté from the coffee stand. As she waits for it to be prepared, she checks her purse for something, but she already knows the answer: the keys to the rental car are with Tim, in his room, where he is napping.
After thanking the barista and taking her coffee, she steps outside into the muggy air and uses an app on her phone to summon a car. Mere minutes later, she is climbing into the backseat. The driver takes the same route that she and Tim took earlier — along the scenic highway that follows the coastline — and, soon enough, she finds herself back in Sonja’s neighborhood.
“Thank you,” she tells the driver. The sedan pulls away, leaving her on the sidewalk across the street from Sonja’s home. She studies the simple yet inviting house for a few seconds and considers her strategy. If Sonja really does have a man inside, maybe she’ll be more willing to talk to Claire, woman-to-woman, without Tim around.
She is mentally reviewing what she plans to say when she sees the front door of Sonja’s house open. Quickly, Claire moves behind a nearby car, not sure that she wants Sonja to see her standing out here as if in wait.
As she ducks down and peers through the car’s windows, Claire watches Sonja step outside and then pause to hold the door open. And that’s when she sees it — or, rather, him.
“Come on, TJ,” Sonja says to the toddler who follows her out of the house.

Shit! Did Sonja have a kid? And TJ … Tim Jr?! 🍿🍿🍿 this just got 💯 more interesting. That being said, If this is Sonja’s baby, I can see why she would have more apprehension to get involved with anything to do with Loretta because she has to protect her kid and she knows that Loretta is basically Satan lol.
I feel for Molly because her grief is so raw and real. It is completely natural for her to assume that Gabs could be her child. I love how the one thing everyone goes back to is that Mol’s baby was a boy when those tests are wrong all the time. But it’s something for them to hold on too. I do love the connection between Brent and Molly tho, you can feel the pull in their scenes.

Thanks, Dallas! Sorry for not getting to this sooner — it appears to have been lost in the barrage of spam that’s been hitting the site lately.
It appears that Sonja just might have had a kid. As you may recall, her final scene before she left King’s Bay involved a pregnancy test, so it’s certainly not out of the question… but yes, it absolutely makes sense why she’d want to keep her kid far away from this shitshow! She made a rash decision to work for “Loretta” (Natalie) in the course of doing her actual job caring for Spencer, and it’s basically done nothing but bite her in the ass since. So it’s hard to blame her for that, and yet, if this is Tim’s child, he has a right to know. He’s not Loretta!
Molly and Brent have been on quite a slow burn since they lost (“lost”) the baby, so it’s been fun to play the complexity of that. They’re both drawn to one another in a way they can’t fight *and* pulling away because of their pain. Also, the doctor told them the baby was a boy after its birth and death, so they’re going on that info and not just an ultrasound… but as we know, Loretta was manipulating him!
