Episode 1073

Previously…
– Sophie acted out when Jason invited Sabrina to join them for dinner.
– Marcus and Bree appeared to develop a connection, and Christian found himself feeling jealous of his two friends.
– Tim and Claire asked Sarah to look into Sonja Kahele’s whereabouts for them.

A dull gray sky hangs over the campus of King’s Bay Academy, as a languid, half-committed rainfall spills down upon the grounds. Bree Halston shields her blonde hair with her backpack as she scurries into one of the locker bays. As she lowers the bag and pushes her hair out of her face, she sees another student sitting cross-legged on the floor of the locker bay — and then recognizes her as the girl who very nearly became her stepsister a few years ago.

Sophie. Hey,” Bree says sweetly. The dark-haired freshman looks up from the book she is reading.

“Oh. Hey.”

Bree approaches her and notices the reusable lunch bag beside Sophie. Its top sits open, revealing the remains of her lunch.

“Did you eat out here?” Bree asks.

Sophie shrugs. “Yeah. I usually sit in the library, but they’re doing work or whatever.”

Bree’s heart stings. “You know, you can always come sit with Christian, Marcus, and me in the cafeteria.”

“I like to read during lunch. But thanks.”

“Seriously. We’d love to spend lunch with you.”

Sophie’s face remains a bit of a blank as she says, “It’s so loud and hectic in there, isn’t it?”

“I mean, it’s a high school cafeteria. We tolerate it.” Bree gestures to the floor. “Mind if I sit?”

“Oh,” Sophie says, surprised. “Sure.” She zips up her lunch bag and moves it out of the way.

“How’s everything going?” Bree asks as she, too, crosses her legs.

“Fine, I guess.”

Your dad gives me little updates now and then, but I should come over and hang out. I miss you.”

“Really?”

“Duh. We were basically sisters for a while there.”

Sophie sighs dramatically. “I know. Sometimes I wish your mom had just gotten away with all of it. Then you and Peter would still live with us.”

“Yeah… That was cool, wasn’t it?”

“It was okay.” Sophie flashes an impish grin. “Did you know my dad’s, like, dating that Sabrina lady now?”

“Really? I see them talking at the rink sometimes, but I had no idea. Wow.”

“He invited her over for dinner one night.”

“How’d that go?”

“I kind of tried to scare her off,” Sophie admits. “I don’t think it worked.”

“Scare her off? Why?”

“Because,” Sophie says, as if the word itself should be enough.

Bree watches another student, a senior she recognizes as being on the soccer team with Caleb, opening his locker across the way as she contemplates what to say next.

“Your dad deserves to be happy,” she says. “He’s a great guy. I feel lucky he’s still my coach. And what my mom did — that wasn’t his fault.”

“I know.” Sophie’s shoulders slump, as she seems to fold in on herself. “She has the same name as the crazy lady who killed my mom!”

“Okay, that’s super-weird. But it’s her name. Shannon or whoever just used it.”

“Still.”

Just outside the locker room, raindrops patter inconsistently against the pavement. The girls listen to them for a few wordless moments.

“How about Christian and Marcus and I come hang with you in the library for lunch one of these days?” Bree suggests. “Or we all eat out on the lawn if it ever stops raining?”

“That sounds cool,” Sophie says with a smile that betrays just how grateful she is.

—–

“Come in, come in,” Sarah Fisher Gray says as she holds open the front door of the family home for her brother and former sister-in-law. Tim and Claire eagerly move in out of the dripping rain and remove their coats.

“Have you heard from Mom?” Tim asks Sarah as he takes Claire’s coat from her and hangs both in the narrow closet nearby.

Claire reacts with surprise. “Where’s Paula?”

“She’s helping out with a food drive over in Port Treigh,” Sarah says. “She’ll be back this weekend. She actually called to check in about an hour ago — did you think Paula Fisher would leave us alone in her house without checking up on things?”

Tim laughs. “Even though you’re a grown woman and it’s your house, too.”

“Even though,” Sarah replies with a chuckle as she leads the way into the living room.

Claire takes a seat on the sofa, and Tim joins her, though there is a cushion between them. Sarah goes to the armchair positioned diagonally from them, but instead of sitting, she stands behind it, resting her elbows on its back.

“We can’t thank you enough for helping out,” Claire says.

“Happy to do it,” Sarah tells her. “I don’t exactly want that maniac Loretta Ragan around our family, either. I’m still worried that it’s only a matter of time before she comes after Mom for shooting Philip.”

“I feel like she’s trying to lull us into complacency by hanging around for a while without doing anything overt,” Tim says. “That’s why finding Sonja seems important. If we can get a step ahead of Loretta…”

Claire and Sarah both nod in agreement.

“That’s why I wanted to meet with you guys today,” Sarah says. “I have news.”

“What kind of news?” Tim asks anxiously. “Were you able to track down Sonja?”

—–

Outside the main academic building of King’s Bay Academy, Christian Taylor waits beneath the overhang to shield himself from the rain. He is checking social media on his phone when he hears his friend calling his name.

“You’ve never gonna believe this!” Marcus Gray says, excitement radiating from him, as he hurries toward Christian. His backpack bounces behind him as if to underscore his elation.

“What is it?!” Christian asks with widened eyes. “What could’ve happened in the five minutes since we split up to go to our lockers?”

“Big stuff!” Marcus holds up his phone. “Remember that Instagram giveaway from the radio station I signed up for?”

Christian’s jaw drops. “You won??”

“Two tickets to Megan Thee Stallion this weekend.”

“No way. That’s so cool.”

“Right?” Marcus looks at the screen of his iPhone in disbelief for a few seconds before finally tucking it away in his jacket pocket. “I didn’t even know real people won those things!”

Christian laughs. “Then who did you think wins them?”

“I dunno.” Marcus shrugs. “Like, kids whose parents work there.”

“Technically my cousin’s mom works there… so that’s almost a connection?”

“Good try. But hey…” Marcus glances around and then leans in, lowering his voice. “I was kinda thinking… would you mind if I asked Bree to come with me?”

“What? Oh.” Christian draws back slightly, and an odd sort of numbness goes to his fingers and toes. “I mean, no. Why would I mind?”

“It’s just — you know you’re my boy.”

That elicits a tentative grin from Christian.

“But Bree, it’s like…” Marcus takes a moment to choose his words. “I kinda think I’d like some one-on-one time with her.”

“Like a… like a date?”

“Yeah. Like take her to something cool and… I dunno. I hate to make you feel left out. I’m sorry. It’s just…”

“I get it.” Christian exerts as much strength as he can to smile back at his friend. “It’s different.”

“Yeah.” Marcus seems to relax into a smile of his own. “So that’s cool, if I ask her?”

“Why would I stand in your way? You’re my two best friends. I love it.”

“Thanks, man,” Marcus says. “Wanna get to class?”

“I don’t know about want… but I guess we should.”

Marcus leads the way into the building, even holding open the door so that Christian can pass through it first. Christian does his best to ignore the confusing, sinking feeling in his stomach at the thought of Marcus and Bree going on a date together.

—–

Sarah presses her palms against the back of the chair and stands up straight.

“First of all, the fact that she deactivated her cell phone is telling,” she explains. “She didn’t want to be contacted or located.”

Tim’s face falls. “So you couldn’t find her?”

“I didn’t say that,” Sarah says, brightening. “You know I’m good at my job.”

Claire and Tim exchange looks of shock.

“Where is she?” Claire asks.

“It seems like she’s living on Kauai,” Sarah says, “not too far from Princeville.”

Tim remains perched on the edge of the sofa. “Seems like?”

“She’s paying rent on a home there. There was a credit check run by the landlord not long after she left King’s Bay, and there are utility bills in her name.”

“That seems pretty promising,” Claire says. “Thank you.”

“I told you I’d find her,” Sarah says with a satisfied grin.

“We owe you,” Tim tells her as he stands.

“You don’t owe me anything,” Sarah responds, “except getting Loretta away from our family for good.”

Claire looks at Tim. “I guess we’d better book some tickets to Hawaii.”

—–

After the period ends, Christian and Marcus step out into the hallway, dodging the heavy foot traffic of students moving between classes. They navigate to the room where their next class will be held and find Bree already in her seat.

“What’s up?” Marcus asks as he and Christian both slide into seats near hers.

“When I went to my locker at the end of lunch, I ran into Sophie,” Bree says with grave seriousness. “I felt so bad.”

Christian crinkles his face. “Why?”

“She was eating alone in the locker bay,” Bree explains, “since it’s raining and the library is closed.”

“She should come eat with us!” Marcus says.

“That’s what I told her. She says the cafeteria is too loud and busy, but… I don’t know, I feel terrible that she spends her lunch breaks alone.”

“I kinda thought she was just doing her own thing,” Christian says. “She does kind of march to the beat of her own drum, or whatever that saying is.”

Bree nods. “I know. I told her we’d join her in the library, or we could all eat out on the lawn when it isn’t raining.”

“Let’s do that,” Christian agrees.

As she fishes a textbook out of her bag, Bree asks, “How are you guys? How was History?”

“It was good,” Marcus says, beaming, “but I’ve got news.”

“What kind of news?” Bree asks.

“Your boy just won two tickets to see Megan Thee Stallion.”

Bree’s jaw drops. “Really? How?!”

“It was this giveaway on Instagram,” Marcus says proudly. “It’s on Saturday. You wanna come with?”

“Me?” She smiles with surprise. “I’d love to… but I have my skating exhibition Sunday morning. So I probably can’t do anything on Saturday.”

“Are you serious? Damn,” Marcus says. “You can’t skip that, huh?”

Bree shakes her head. “No. Jason would kill me. And I’ve practiced so hard for it. Why don’t you take Christian?”

Christian bashfully looks up from his phone, into which he’s been trying to divert his attention.

“I don’t want you to feel like my second choice or anything,” Marcus tells him.

“You’re sure you can’t go?” Christian asks Bree.

“I really can’t,” she says. “You guys go! Have fun.”

“Okay,” Christian says. “That sounds fun. We’ll send you a lot of videos and stuff, okay?”

“I’ll be waiting for them,” Bree says, as the bell rings and students begin to turn toward the front of the classroom.

Marcus leans across to tell Christian, “Saturday’s gonna be lit,” before he, too, faces the front of the room.

Christian finds a grin playing upon his lips and a strange fluttering inside his chest as he thinks about how fun it will be to go to a show with Marcus, just the two of them.

  1. Oh so fun to have an episode with the new teen set … my goodness remember when the young set was Travis, Landon, Elly? 🤯

I’m getting the feeling that Christian is going to be batting on our team which is a fun twist because it just continues to show the difference between the twins. He is setting himself up for disappointment tho if he thinks Marcus is into him because he made it clear he likes Bree. Teen angst is always fun to play!
And great use of the history with the connection between Bree and Sophie; Sophie needs someone in her corner and Bree could be that character for her.

I love the new younger crew – interested to see where this goes!

  22. Good article. It is unfortunate that over the last decade, the travel industry has already been able to to deal with terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu virus, swine flu, and also the first ever entire global recession. Through all this the industry has proven to be solid, resilient and also dynamic, locating new methods to deal with trouble. There are usually fresh issues and the opportunity to which the field must just as before adapt and respond.

  23. I would also love to add that if you do not already have an insurance policy or perhaps you do not form part of any group insurance, you could possibly well take advantage of seeking the assistance of a health insurance agent. 28. One more thing I would like to state is that rather than trying to match all your online degree lessons on times that you finish work (since the majority of people are exhausted when they get home), try to obtain most of your instructional classes on the week-ends and only one or two courses for weekdays, even if it means a little time away from your weekend.
